What's Happening in the Hives at the End of April
As April winds down and the signs of a true Wisconsin spring start to settle in, it’s an exciting time for bees—and beekeepers! At Waterford Bee Company, we’re buzzing with activity as our hives wake up from their winter rest and begin preparing for a new season of growth, pollination, and honey production.

🌸 What’s Happening in the Hives?
By late April, the bees are in full spring buildup mode. Queens are ramping up egg-laying, new workers are hatching, and colonies are expanding rapidly to take advantage of the early blooms like dandelions, willows, and maples. These vital food sources give bees the pollen and nectar they need to fuel the growing hive.
It's also the time when beekeepers are closely monitoring hives for signs of strong queen performance, sufficient food stores, and healthy brood patterns. Hive checks are careful but essential—ensuring that colonies are thriving without causing unnecessary stress during unpredictable spring weather.
🐝 Tips for Gardeners and Bee Friends
If you're a gardener or a backyard bee supporter, now is a perfect time to:
Plant native, pollinator-friendly flowers that will bloom throughout spring and summer.
Leave dandelions for a few more weeks—they’re one of the first major food sources for bees.
Avoid using pesticides and herbicides that can harm bees during this critical period.
🌿 Looking Ahead
As May approaches, we’re preparing for swarming season—a natural part of a hive’s growth—and expanding our hives to give bees plenty of room to thrive. We’re also getting ready for No Mow May, encouraging our community to let lawns grow a little wild to support local pollinators.
Stay tuned for more updates as the season unfolds! Thank you for supporting Waterford Bee Company—and for supporting the bees that keep our world blooming.
